Joey's Island Assemblage Art
Joe De Haan

"The danger is in pleasing an immediate public: the immediate public that comes around you and takes you in and accepts you and gives you success and everything. Instead of that, you should wait for fifty years or a hundred years for your true public. That is the only public that interests me."
Marcel Duchamp

About
I was born in New York City 1968,but grew up and have lived on a large island (America's oldest seaport) off the Northeast Coast of the U.S. since 1973 .I've become immersed in the beauty, power, and intrigue of the ocean.Gratefully it brings my art supplies. Introducing personality, life,as well as suffering and humor into my abstract and figural sea creatures are goals.Other works include elements of implied movement, multiple creatures interacting, and themes of maritime history.

The Process
Being able to begin a new art object for me requires finding the main foundation of the piece ,usually driftwood I need to see something in or simply a concept, and all the materials from the seaside that will be a part of it. A great deal of time is spent searching for ingredients along rocky shores and beaches. The encouraging part is every new tide may turn up or bring something in. Zero to minor modification of items used is paramount. From this beginning point the next step is something pointing me in a direction, then imbuing the message and feelings I want to convey.
